Horton Plaza Park and Arts for Learning San Diego are providing another fun, art-filled event with fantastic performances and hands-on visual arts programming as well as dog-friendly fun for families and residents to enjoy in the Park. Why? Horton Plaza Park is committed to creating fabulous ways to draw people to their park and participate in events. This time, arts education non-profit, Arts for Learning San Diego and Horton Plaza Park have created an event not to be missed by families or their dogs! The Dog Days of Summer is Sunday, August 6th, 2017 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. The event will take place at Horton Plaza Park, located at 900 Fourth Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. Starting around 11am, the Rob Thorsen Jazz Quartet will be first up on the stage. As one of Arts for Learning San Diego’s long-standing professional performing artists, Thorsen and his Quartet bring a lively groove and are a crowd pleaser. Thorsen is a distinguished bassist, composer, and educator. We encourage you to come early, find your spot and settle into the Amphitheater of the Park. Hands-on arts activities will be ongoing during the event delivered from Arts for Learning San Diego and partners, Blick Art Materials, The New Children’s Museum, and the Veterans Museum. For this “festival” style event, kids and families are encouraged to enjoy the art stations, and create at their own pace. You can expect to experience a dog-themed project from Arts for Learning San Diego, an engaging photo area designed by Blick Art Materials, greeting cards for Veterans from the Veterans Museum and easel chalk drawing and bubbles from the New Children’s Museum. There will be a noticeable dog theme because dogs are encouraged to attend on a leash AND be dressed for the doggie costume contest! The fun doesn’t end there! The Veterans Museum will be peppering the audience with the 3 US Veterans, Brian Meyer providing a Plein- air watercolor of the event, Barry Toombs on the Westwind brass, and spoken word from AA LoBue, better known as “Tony the Vet.” Dance by PGK Dance Project will also inspire as they move to the music and spoken word choreographing in the moment! Once the live performances are done, if you hear a dog themed song come on, any guests who get up and dance per the requirements will earn a raffle ticket. Also of note along with our special dog theme, we will have the Pooch Hotel onsite and providing information and swag. We are excited that we will also have swag again from our partners at Lakeshore Learning and special swag from Unleashed! We are pleased that Lemonade will be providing salad samples and some lemonade for first come first serve guests and Jamba Juice will have a prize wheel, swag and refreshing mini-menu items available. Lastly, Horton Plaza Park’s Park Activities Coordinator will host games such as giant jenga, corn hole and lawn darts for all to enjoy. The Park’s interactive pop-jet fountain will be turned on after the performances. Kids can play, cool off in the fountain, or continue to make art. The games and activities will overlap. The event ends at 1pm, however the park’s activities will continue until their usual end time at 2:30pm. Guests are encouraged to park at City street meters which are free on Sundays or may park in the Westfield shopping center parking structure where parking is free for the first hour, after that time regular garage rates will apply. We want to make sure that families have access to free, quality arts programming, so come make a day of enjoying this event and then explore the downtown area. Organized together by Horton Park Plaza and Arts for Learning San Diego, it’s notable that the Park has made a complete donation of their time, facilities, and coordination along with Arts for Learning San Diego.
